Learn to Knit a Hat

Jump into the world of seamless knitting! (No sewing necessary!!) Pattern is included.

In this class, we will be making a preemie-size hat, but all of these skills are applicable to making hats (and many other projects) of bigger sizes! You will learn how to: read a multi-size pattern, work in the round on circular needles and double-pointed needles, a simple ribbing pattern, how to transfer to double-pointed needles, and how to work decreases.

This project is a great stash-buster, and NICUs love to get them for their tiny babies. Please consider donating some as you practice and get better. Babies aren’t terribly particular, as long as it’s soft and warm.

Participants should already know how to cast on (long tail, cable cast-on, or another stretchy cast on).

You will need:

1 skein of DK or sport weight yarn. One skein will make several preemie size hats, or a couple of adult hats.

Size 6 (4mm) circular needles, at least 16” long, Size 6 (4mm) double pointed needles (don’t be afraid, they’re easier to work with than they look).

Note: if your circular needles are 24” long or longer, I can teach you the magic loop method and the double-pointed needles are unnecessary.
